The Plague Bureau is not simply a department that releases disease
The Plague Bureau's functions include spreading plague, inspecting faults, warning, urging goodness and pacifying plague. In ancient society, uncontrollable disease was often explained as cosmic disorder or human moral consequence, so the Plague Bureau carries both punishment and harmonization. This site avoids turning mythic narrative into real medical advice.
The four-direction plague envoys represent plague spread and disaster narratives in different directions.
The Admonition Master shows that the Plague Bureau is not only punitive; it also often carries moral admonition.
The Plague-Pacifying Daoist reflects a belief logic of appeasing, averting and harmonizing disease disasters.
Fengshen fiction, Daoist plague gods and local Five-Plague beliefs need source-based columns.
Main members
Wenhuang Haotian Dadi, Lü Yue
Lu Yue is the most conspicuous central figure of the Plague Bureau in Investiture of the Gods; his magical treasures and plague narratives revolve around disease as technique. After enfeoffment he can serve as the Plague Bureau chief entry.
Zhou Xin, Li Qi, Zhu Tianlin and Yang Wenhui
Eastern Plague Envoy Zhou Xin, Southern Plague Envoy Li Qi, Western Plague Envoy Zhu Tianlin and Northern Plague Envoy Yang Wenhui form the four-direction executive layer.
Chen Geng and Li Ping
Admonition Master Chen Geng and Plague-Pacifying Daoist Li Ping pull the Plague Bureau back from a single disaster narrative into a belief structure of warning, harmonizing and relieving misfortune.
Common misunderstandings
The Plague Bureau is not the Pox Bureau
The Plague Bureau leans toward broad epidemics, seasonal diseases and disaster narratives; the Pox Bureau leans toward pox, smallpox and specific disease imagination. They are related but should be separate columns.
Plague-god belief is not only Investiture of the Gods
Local Five-Plague, Wangye belief and sending-off-plague boats have their own traditions and should later enter folk pantheon or seasonal custom columns, not all be stuffed into the Fengshen Eight Bureaus.
